In Canada, 335 persons were charged with impaired operation per 100,000 person's aged 16 and older in 1996. Provincial rates varied, ranging from a high of 718 in Saskatchewan to 265 in Newfoundland. Between 1986 and 1996, there was a 47% decrease in the number of persons charged nationally. All jurisdictions experienced decreases. Alberta's rate of 486 persons charged with impaired operation per 100,000 population in 1996 was 45% higher than the national rate of 335. Among the western provinces, Alberta's rate was second highest with Saskatchewan recording the highest rate (718). |
