Nationally, in 1996, 21,811 youths were charged in violent incidents, translating into a rate of 903 youths charged per 100,000 youths. Nationally, the rate of youths charged for violent incidents declined by 4% in 1996 over the previous year, marking the first year since 1986 when the rate showed an outright decline.

In Alberta, 2675 youths were charged in violent incidents, translating into a rate of 1,084 youths charged per 100,000 youths. This is the second consecutive year in which the rate of youth charged with violent incidents has increased in Alberta.

Nationally, in 1996, 65,835 youths (12-17) were charged in property incidents, translating into a rate of 2,724 youths charged per 100,000 youths.

In Alberta in 1996, 8,746 youths were charged with property incidents, translating into a rate of 3,545 youths charged per 100,000 youths.
