Provincial crime rates in 1996 ranged from a low of 5,927 Criminal Code incidents per 100,000 population in Newfoundland to a rate of 13,918 in British Columbia.

Historically, crime rates in the Atlantic provinces have generally been lower than those in Quebec and Ontario, which in turn have been lower than rates in the Western provinces. The Yukon and Northwest Territories, with low populations, have historically shown greater crime rates than the provinces.

Alberta, with a rate of 8,901, recorded the lowest rate among the western provinces but was still 1.6% above the national rate of 8,758. Only the western provinces recorded rates higher than the national average.
