Background on Consultations
Alberta Summit On Justice
Role of the all-party MLA public consultation committee

Members of the all-party MLA public consultation committee, chaired by Mr. Richard Magnus, were appointed by the Honourable Jon Havelock, Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General. The all-party committee has responsibility for public consultations across the province. Members will attend public consultations to listen to the concerns and ideas of Albertans.

Organization of public consultations

The public consultations are being held in 17 communities across Alberta in May, June and September 1998. News releases and local advertisements will inform the public about the consultations, how to be involved, and how to obtain copies of a public consultation guide.

The public consultation guide has been sent to all MLA offices across Alberta. Additional copies can be requested from Alberta Justice Communications at 427-8530 (toll-free 310-0000). The guide is also available at Alberta courthouses, Alberta Justice offices, public libraries, and RCMP detachments. The guide can also be downloaded from this web site.

The public can be involved by:

* registering in a public consultation. To register, phone 427-8530 (for toll-free assistance call 310-0000). Registering in advance will guarantee any member of the public an opportunity to present ideas to the MLA panel.

* attending one of the consultations without pre-registration. An opportunity to speak without pre-registration cannot be guaranteed, but the participant will be able to submit ideas in writing to the panel.

* submitting ideas in writing, by faxing or mailing the Alberta Summit on Justice Office. All submissions must by received by September 30, 1998.

* talking to their local MLA.

Other Consultations

Other consultations will be organized across Alberta by working committee members who represent different sectors of the justice system. In addition, MLAs may also organize consultations or mini-summits.

The results and recommendations of public consultations will be provided to Richard Magnus, chair of the all-party public consultation committee, by September 30, 1998.

The results of both public and justice sector consultations will form the basis for discussion by summit delegates.
