The Public Trustee maintains a registry of applications made and grants issued by all locations of the Surrogate Court since 1947. Searches for persons deceased before 1947 have to be conducted through the Surrogate Court using their forms.
The grants most often issued are for Probate or Letters of Administration. Records of Caveats and International Wills are maintained by the Succession Duties Clerk.
The following information is maintained on the database:
- The last, first, and middle name of the deceased
- Any alias
- Date of death
- The judicial district
- Place of residence
- The net value of the estate
- Application type (Probate, Letters of Administration, Letters of Administration with Will Annexed, Election, etc.)
- Applicant name and address
- Solicitor
- Date application filed
- Date of grant
- Surrogate Court number
It is important to note that the Index of Grants is just a registry of information. The actual documents relating to the applications and grants are in the various Surrogate Court locations or in archival storage, but not in the Public Trustee’s Office.
There is a $10.00 charge for each search item in the Index of Grants. The Surrogate Court photocopying charges are $1.00 per page.
