Lawyers often represent or provide information to creditors, debtors or other stakeholders of the Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP). To assist the legal community in understanding some of our policies and practices, we have designed web pages entitled “A Lawyer’s Guide to the Maintenance Enforcement Program.” These pages may be accessed under the “General Info” section of MEP’s website at www.albertamep.gov.ab.ca. Some of the topics include how to obtain your client’s information, what orders or agreements MEP can enforce, and how to word provisions in orders for ease of enforcement. The Lawyer’s Guide also provides information about substitutionally serving a party through MEP, reducing maintenance or arrears and stays of enforcement.
The policies and practices reflected in “A Lawyer’s Guide to the Maintenance Enforcement Program” will be updated as necessary. To provide feedback about the website or the information presented in it, e-mail us at albertamep@gov.ab.ca.
We also encourage individuals to access the wealth of additional information about MEP that may be obtained from www.albertamep.gov.ab.ca. There are information sheets about registering with MEP, the types of collection actions available, file accounting and adjustment issues, and referrals to resources to assist creditors and debtors.
