On September 22, 2008 the Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP) introduced a new Debtor Statement of Account which makes it easier for debtors to understand what is happening with their file.
You can read your Statement of Account at MEP Accounts Online or you can request a copy by calling the program at 780-422-5555 (dial 310-0000 for toll-free access anywhere in Alberta) and following the prompts.
While online, you can print a copy of your Statement of Account including the Debtor Summary. You can also select the “Request Statement” option to have a copy of your Statement of Account mailed to you. Statements of Account can be sorted by transaction date (default setting) and by effective date.
The Debtor Summary provides a snapshot of the activity on your file for a specific period. This includes all the charges, including any interest or penalties that have been added to or removed from your file, and what payments have been made to the creditor(s) or towards penalties. If you are charged interest, the money paid to creditors will be included in the “Paid to Recipients” amount. You will also be able to see any payments you have made to MEP but that have not yet been processed and paid out to the creditor(s) under the “Payments Paid Out” section.
If you require information about your file for tax purposes, you may request a Debtor Yearly File Summary Statement, which replaces the tax letter, through MEP Accounts Online (https://extranet.gov.ab.ca/just/mep/). The summary is sorted by effective date and will display all of the activities on the file for a given year. Only the year selected will print.
Please note that not all of the amounts paid to MEP by debtors can be claimed as an income tax deduction. For more information, please contact the Canada Revenue Agency.
