Creditors (the person entitled to maintenance) may choose not to have interest charged and collected on their behalf. For more information about interest, please see information sheet Interest Charges.
Creditors registered before October 1, 2008
Creditors registered with MEP before October 1, 2008 have only one (1) opportunity to tell MEP not to charge interest on their behalf.
Once a creditor has asked MEP not to charge interest, they will not be able to ask that interest be collected again.
Creditors registered after October 1, 2008
Creditors registered with MEP after October 1, 2008 can ask MEP, at the time they register, to not charge interest on their behalf. Creditors may also contact MEP after their file is registered to ask that interest not be charged.
If a creditor has chosen not to have interest charged at the time they register with MEP, they may ask that interest be charged at a later date. However, a creditor may only do so one (1) time while their file is registered with us and cannot ask again that interest not be charged.
Creditors registered by Alberta Employment and Immigration
A creditor may ask MEP not to charge interest on their behalf while receiving Income Support from Alberta Employment and Immigration (AE&I) (formerly Employment, Immigration and Industry). However, a creditor can only ask that interest not be charged on money owing to the creditor and cannot do so for money owing to the Crown. For more information on what happens to maintenance while a creditor is receiving Income Support, please see Info Sheet Income Support and the Government’s Right to Receive Maintenance Payments.
How to ask MEP not to collect interest on your behalf
Creditors must complete the Waive Interest form and return it to MEP in order to have MEP not charge interest.
