Service Fees

MEP’s standard services are currently available at no charge. However, the Maintenance Enforcement Act and Maintenance Enforcement Regulation allow MEP to charge fees for certain services. MEP uses service fees to improve service for all clients and to reinforce the need to comply with court orders and MEP procedures.

Re-registration of a closed file: $200

(Effective October 1, 2008)

The re-registration fee applies if the file was closed after October 1, 2008 and:

  • a client closes a file and then asks for it to be re-opened
  • a creditor asks to re-open a file closed by MEP due to that creditor’s lack of cooperation, for example:
    • by failing to provide direct deposit or current contact information
    • by failing to complete and return a Child Status Report.

The re-registration fee does NOT apply if:

  • clients are registering for the first time
  • a file is re-opened because new circumstances, including a court order or a change in a child’s circumstances, make it enforceable again
  • the file was closed before October 1, 2008.

Creditors do not pay the re-registration fee up front. Instead, the fee will be collected by MEP from the creditor’s file only after MEP receives enough funds from the debtor to cover at least one full month of current support owing. Debtors will be asked to pay the re-registration fee at the time of registration.

Third-party service of documents: $50

(Effective October 1, 2008)

Some court orders allow individuals to serve documents on a debtor or creditor through third parties such as MEP. This is called a substitutional service order.
This service includes any documents as directed by the court that one party may need to serve on another. MEP charges $50 to cover the costs of serving the documents on the appropriate party. This fee is payable when the service is requested.

Interest Charge Service Fee

(Effective October 1, 2008)

MEP will be charging interest on late payments beginning October 1, 2008. Eighty percent (80%) of the collected interest will be paid to the creditor while twenty percent (20%) will be retained by MEP as a service charge. For more information on the interest process including calculation methods, please see the information sheet on Interest.
