Info Sheet - Making Payments From Outside Canada

It is important that debtors select a payment method that ensures payments are made in a timely manner. By making sure their payments are received by MEP on or before the court-ordered due date, debtors will avoid collection action, late penalties and interest.

The best way to make payments if you live outside of Canada is by pre-authorized withdrawal from a Canadian bank account. This payment method is the simplest and easiest way of ensuring your payments are made on time. You will avoid the potential for inconvenient collection action when payments are forgotten or lost in the mail. Pre-authorized payments are processed efficiently and accurately and will reach your family quickly. To take advantage of this option, you will need to complete and return a Debtor Payment Form.

For debtors living in countries where pre-arranged payments from a Canadian bank account cannot be established, you can pay by Quick Collect or by mailing bank drafts or money orders.

Quick Collect payments can be made almost anywhere in the world. There are three easy steps to make your payment this way:

  1. Call 1-800-325-6000 to determine the Western Union agent nearest you.
  2. When you arrive with your payment, identify yourself as a Quick Collect customer and provide your account number.
  3. Complete the Quick Collect Payment Form, indicating the Alberta Department of Justice as the payee and MEP AB as the destination. Keep your receipt with your Quick Collect money transfer control number.

Debtors should be aware that it can take several days for Quick Collect payments to be received by MEP. Payments made close to a government holiday will require additional time for MEP to receive. To avoid late penalties and interest, please ensure you allow enough time for payments to be processed.

Bank drafts or money orders may be mailed to MEP at:

Maintenance Enforcement Program
7th Floor, J.E. Brownlee Bldg.
10365 97 Street
Edmonton, AB T5J 3W7
Canada
If paying by Quick Collect, bank draft or money order, it is important that your NAME and MEP ACCOUNT NUMBER are PRINTED on all payment transactions. This will ensure that your payment is recorded to the correct account.

* Debtor Payment Forms may be found on MEP’s website at www.albertamep.gov.ab.ca or ordered through the MEP Info Line.  To reach the MEP Info Line  call 780-422-5555 (dial 310-0000 for toll-free access anywhere in Alberta) and follow the voice prompts. Debtor Payment Forms are catalogue #99010.
