What if I am required to pay a specified amount each month and the employee barely earns that amount? For employment income earned before May 1, 2005, employees are allowed a basic exemption of $525 per month, plus 30% of remaining income after certain payroll deductions are made. After May 1, 2005, MEP can attach a maximum of an amount equal to 40% of the debtor's gross wages. If the amount you are required to pay is more than this, complete the Calculation of Payment Worksheet and pay this lesser amount. You may also wish to tell the debtor to contact MEP staff to negotiate a payment arrangement. These arrangements may often lead to a decrease in the amount MEP attaches each month.
