Maintenance Enforcement Program
What is a writ? When a debtor is in default, MEP may file a debtor's maintenance order at the Alberta Personal Property Registry. This registration is commonly referred to as a "writ", and may be placed against the name of the debtor and against any personal property that the debtor may own, such as recreational or other vehicles. The filing of a writ may prevent debtors from transferring clear title to property they may wish to sell. It also allows MEP to seize assets (including vehicles and certain retirement savings plans, shares, and bonds) and places MEP as the first creditor to receive money when a successful action is taken by any other entity to collect judgement funds from a debtor.
