An independent commission will recommend salaries and benefits for Alberta’s justices of the peace for the period of April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2008.
Sitting justices of the peace primarily hear trials on traffic offences. Presiding justices of the peace, who are located in Edmonton and Calgary, provide such services as granting of bail and issuing search warrants for all of Alberta.
The commissioner of the 2006 Justice of the Peace Compensation Commission, David G. Tettensor, QC will make recommendations relative to:
- the appropriate level of compensation for sitting and presiding justices of the peace who are full time or part time;
- the appropriate level and type of benefits and allowances for sitting and presiding justices of the peace;
- any other issues relevant to the financial security of the justices of the peace, which the commission agrees to address.
The commission must review all relevant written and oral submissions made to it by the Crown, justices of the peace and members of the public.
