Applied Corrections degreefirst in Western Canada.
By Angelle Meunier A new applied degree program at Lethbridge Community College is raising the professional standing of those working in Corrections. The college is now offering a Bachelor of Applied Corrections degree, the first of its kind in Western Canada. Arnold Galet, Assistant Deputy Minister of Correctional Services encourages employees to closely examine this opportunity for personal and professional development. “It’s encouraging to see that corrections is recognized as a profession and that there are an increasing number of opportunities to obtain professional certification in this field,” said Galet. The program starts with a two-year diploma in Criminal Justice. The third year focuses on building on the knowledge gained from the diploma, and the fourth year puts students to work in directed field study. Second year student Diana Heninger was pursuing a major in math studies before she decided to make a career shift. “I liked the idea of working hands-on with people, and finding new ways of dealing with problems,” said Heninger. Michael Kupchyk, a third year student with a previous diploma in policing, was interested in finding out about another side of the justice system. The class sizes and staff convinced Kupchyk this was his next move. “These are some of the most knowledgeable people in the business, they know it, they’ve seen it, they’ve done it.” Currently, there are six Solicitor General employees enrolled in the university program.
