Editors' Notes
One
of the purposes of this publication is to increase the publics
knowledge and understanding of the justice system. We also hope
that along the way you learn about some of the programs and accomplishments
of Alberta Justice and Alberta Solicitor General.
On
a larger scale, this fall the provincial government will introduce
a new way for the public to access government. It is called Service
Alberta. This is a web site that allows you to easily find information
online. You wont need to know the exact ministry responsible
for your area of interest. All online services will be available
in one spot.
It
is all organized in a very user-friendly way, using headers such
as Popular Topics, Events in Your Life or Quick Links. Check it
out this September at www.servicealberta.ca.
This
issue is packed with news and features. Besides our front page coverage
of the G8 Summit, there are stories about the review of provincial
corrections programs (p. 5), some plans
for new court facilities in Calgary (p. 12),
the decision to make the Judicial Dispute Resolution program a permanent
option in Edmonton (p. 7) and news of the
new high risk offender web site (p. 8).
We
also acknowledge the contributions of two Grant MacEwan College
students who completed their practicums with us this spring. Barbara
Brown (journalism program) contributed an article on dispute resolution
officers (p. 13) and the profile of Calgarys
new Chief Crown Prosecutor (p. 6). Josh
Stewart (public relations program) wrote an item on a new training
manual for victims advocates (p. 14).
