The provincial government issued an Expression of Interest in June 2002 to gather ideas and options for the possibility of building new law courts in Calgary as a public-private partnership.

The courts in downtown Calgary are currently spread out over six buildings, which are facing ever-increasing challenges to provide space for courtroom services.

“The last census showed that Calgary was the fastest growing metropolitan area in Canada and our current facilities can’t keep up with that kind of growth,” said Justice Minister Dave Hancock.

“This project gives us an opportunity to not only address concerns about future expansion, but also makes the justice system much more accessible for Calgarians.”

The Expression of Interest is being used to determine the level of interest and draw out ideas from the private sector that will assist the government in developing project requirements. Alberta Infrastructure will review the responses received by the August 30, 2002 closing date.
