Premier's
Award of Excellence Winners
Once again,
Alberta Justice and Solicitor General employees have proved they are among
the best of the best. The two departments are the recipients of four Premier's
Awards of Excellence two silver and two bronze. Congratulations
to the following employees:
Implementation
of the Protection Against Family Violence Act
Silver (Justice/Solicitor General, joint with
Children's Services)
In
the spring of 1998 the provincial government passed the Protection
Against Family Violence Act. The Minister of Justice gave the
task of implementing the Act to MLA Jocelyn Burgener, in conjunction
with the cross-department Interdepartmental Committee on Family Violence.
The ICFV was used as a springboard to set up an interim body to focus
solely on the Act. This committee formed eight cross-government sub-committees
to develop regulations, collect data, monitor and evaluate the Act,
and train police and inform stakeholders.

Respect
in the Workplace An Initiative Under the Positive Workplace
Program
Silver (Solicitor General/Justice)
A 21-member,
cross-divisional team from Alberta Justice (now Alberta Justice and
Attorney General and Alberta Solicitor General) was given a broad
mandate to develop a strategy to address issues related to sexual
and workplace harassment. This project was a collaborative effort
between the department and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.
The program has been so successful that several departments and private
sector organizations have expressed interest in Respect in the Workplace.
A second workshop is being developed to meet the needs of supervisors
and managers.

Large
Trial Courtroom Project
Bronze (Justice/Solicitor General, joint with Alberta
Infrastructure)
After more than 30 gang members were arrested
in Edmonton, there was a need for a courtroom large enough to try
all the accused at one time. This facility was built in the basement
of the Edmonton Law Courts building in less than a year, and has received
superior reviews from the legal community. The courtroom is high-tech
and has the flexibility to be used for other trials in all three levels
of court.
