Editor's Notes
Election brings big changes for justice staff and partners

It's a tired cliché but nonetheless true: the only thing certain in this world is change. That maxim certainly applies to Alberta's public service, perhaps even more than most organizations.

Big changes came to Alberta Justice after this year's election — the biggest change was being divided into two departments, Alberta Justice and Attorney General and Alberta Solicitor General. Another big one was the announcement that former Deputy Minister Paul Bourque was leaving Alberta Justice to pursue an opportunity with the Investment Dealers Association of Canada.

Another old saying is that 'everything old is new again.' Many employees will remember a time when the departments existed separately - 1992 to be exact. In fact, Alberta Solicitor General existed uninterrupted for nearly 20 years before merging with Attorney General in 1992.

What never changes is that employees, stakeholders and community partners continue to have important work to do. We still have courthouses to run, correctional centers to manage, projects to complete. The work of the justice system never stops.

To most employees and partners, the logo in the top left-hand corner of the letterhead makes little difference to how they do their job. For some, however, the division of the department drastically changed their job description. This new structure will provide plenty of challenges and opportunities for many employees.

Just-in will continue to bring you information about the latest happenings and innovations in both departments. The justice system doesn't recognize the physical or organizational aspects of government departments. That being the case, we thought it best to continue with a publication that deals with the justice system as a whole.
