Crime Prevention: It's about more than locks

Over the years, the way we think about crime prevention has changed. It's about more than just locks and alarms. Increasingly, crime prevention is also about addressing the root causes of crime through social development.

That's one of the messages Solicitor General Heather Forsyth will be giving during the 11th annual Alberta Crime Prevention Week, May 11-18. The week is co-sponsored by the Alberta Solicitor General and the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association.

Some of the highlights of the week include:

  • Alberta Crime Prevention Week Awards Ceremony, May 11, Government House, Edmonton.

  • Alberta Crime Prevention Association Symposium 2002, May 8-10, Fantasyland Hotel, Edmonton.

  • 5th Annual Western Canadian School Resource Officer Conference, May 12-14, Fantasyland Hotel, Edmonton.

  • Province-wide advertising campaign, community events, media events, highway banners, web site and more.

"As we prepare for Alberta Crime Prevention Week, my message remains the same - everyone has a role in preventing crime," said Alberta Solicitor General Heather Forsyth. "The best way to prevent crime is for communities to work together to develop strategies to address local issues."

It's not too late to get involved. Planning guides are available to assist in organizing local events or activities.
