Speakers Centre boosts classroom
interest and encourages learning
By Karen Machura
What’s involved in prosecuting a criminal case? How do you prevent crime
in your school and community? What is the new Youth Criminal Justice Act? What
is the role of a judge?
These are just a few of the topics available through the new justice speakers
centre.
Alberta’s Justice Speakers Centre is a public service resource designed
for teachers and community leaders who want to help their students learn more
about the justice system through the words and experience of a legal expert.
By sending an e-mail, or making a phone call to one central location, a request
can be made to have a Crown prosecutor, a judge, civil and constitutional lawyers,
various department professionals, the Solicitor General, or the Minister of Justice
and Attorney General come to speak with students.
Also available, free of charge, is Alberta’s Justice System and You brochure.
It provides the facts about the justice system including the major participants
and the important roles that each plays. This resource can also help students
better understand the responsibilities of the provincial departments of Alberta
Justice and Alberta Solicitor General.
