Calgary's Arlene Swystun succumbs to cancer
Arlene Swystun, of the Calgary Crown Prosecutors’ Office Public Assistance Unit, passed away in September after a brief but courageous struggle with cancer.
During her life she dedicated herself to educating community agencies, victims and witnesses about the justice system.
As a tireless and articulate advocate she is best known for her valuable work in developing the first Alberta Justice Public Assistance Unit, coordinating the annual Victim Awareness Training in collaboration with the Calgary Police Service Victim Assistance Unit and HomeFront, as well as for creating an array of useful materials for community agencies. Reflective of her dedicated effort and outstanding contribution to the prevention of domestic violence Ms. Swystun received the 2003 Jerry P. Selinger award.
She will be truly missed and remembered by all those that knew of her warmth, compassion and commitment to improving Alberta’s justice system.
