Last summer young offenders at the Grande Prairie Young Offender Centre received instruction from an Aboriginal artist and elder in the design of a mural with a message.

The message of the mural concerns the medicine wheel, the seven teachings of the grandfathers, HIV, AIDS and Hepatitus C. The intent behind creating the mural was to heighten the youth’s awareness of their skills, cultural understanding, and to build self-esteem and self-respect.

“The project definitely provided the youth with a new skill set and a wealth of information about choosing and living healthier lifestyles,” said Miles Anderson, the director of the young offender centre.

Artist Janet Enfield with the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre has worked with the Grande Prairie Young Offender Centre for the past two summers.
