Have you ever considered becoming a mentor to a young person?

Mentor meIf you have, now is the time to step forward.

An Edmonton-area advertising campaign is underway until January to encourage adults to become mentors. The campaign includes TV, radio, newspaper, transit and movie theatre advertising, as well as posters, brochures, bookmarks, media articles and a web site (www.mentoringworks.ab.ca).

Currently there are almost 1,000 mentors in the Edmonton region and the campaign is seeking 300 more.

The campaign is supported by a wide range of provincial government departments, non-profit community organizations and private businesses.

In the justice system, the Edmonton Young Offenders Centre is working with the Boys' and Girls' Club of Edmonton to find mentors for young offenders preparing to re-enter the community.

Mentoring works.Mentors are matched with young offenders about five months prior to release and the match continues into the community.

Mentors must be prepared to commit one or two hours per week for 16 to 18 months.
