Solicitor General
kicks off the
Ski-Check season
The importance of
protecting your ski and snowboard equipment was reinforced by the Solicitor
General at Canada Olympic Park. On November 29, 2002, an event was held
at the park in conjunction with the Calgary Police Service to encourage
ski and snowboard enthusiasts to protect their equipment during the busy
winter season.
The ski-check program
was developed by the ministry in the early '80s to discourage and decrease
the number of thefts by marking equipment for easy identification by police.
"The reality
is theft happens, so we all have to work together to prevent crime on
the ski hills," said Alberta Solicitor General Heather Forsyth.
There are a number
of easy steps people can make to protect their gear including:
- Marking skis,
poles, snowboards
and bindings with a driver's
licence number to make it easy
for police to track.
- Locking equipment
or leaving
it where you can see it.
- Storing skis in
separate places
if locking is not an option.
As part of the ski-check
program, brochures were developed that include a wallet identification
card specific to protecting ski and snowboard equipment. If someone is
a victim of theft they can use the brochures when reporting the crime
to police. The brochures are available through your local police service.
