
The City of Calgary received four Community Support Officers April 29 as part of a pilot project launched in Calgary and Edmonton. The Community Support Officers will complement the law enforcement presence in these cities. This is one of several policing initiatives the province and the two cities will undertake to ensure the safety of Albertans.  Demonstrations on how to avoid vehicle theft, anti-theft devices and examples of damaged vehicles were on display May 11 as part of Crime Prevention Week. Justice Minister Ron Stevens has been out and about touring court facilities and meeting staff, judiciary, local law enforcement and Bar Association members in locations across the province over the last few months. He’s also made a number
of announcements along the way.
On June 22 he visited northern Alberta, and announced the appointment of a new judge in both Fort McMurray and Peace River. James Rupert Jacques, QC, was appointed to Fort McMurray Provincial Court and G. William (Bill) Paul was appointed to Peace River Provincial Court.
While in St. Paul on July 21, the Minister announced the expansion of the St. Paul/Vegreville Crown office and the addition of two new Crown Prosecutors for the area. The St. Paul/Vegreville Crown office will now also serve the areas of Athabasca, Boyle, Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park.
From September 14-16, the Minister was in Southern Alberta, visiting courthouses in Fort McLeod, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. He announced new civil mediation programs for the Provincial Courts in both Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

More than 100 network members gathered in Canmore at the fifth annual Connections Networking Conference hosted by the Public Legal Education Network of Alberta (PLENA). During the two-day conference delegates attended seminars, workshops and roundtable sessions that addressed key justice topics such as family violence, equal access to legal services, media and the law, crime prevention, and the role of justice education. Guest speakers included Chief Justice Allan Wachowich, Preston Manning and Justice Minister Ron Stevens. |
In April, thousands of Albertans took the opportunity to learn more about Alberta’s justice system through taking part in Law Day events held in a number of cities across the province. During this event a variety of activities took place in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Red Deer such as courthouse and holding cells tours, career fairs, mock trials, RCMP and fire department demonstrations, the swearing-in of new Canadian citizens and a guest appearance by Justice Minister Ron Stevens.
