Banff hosts World Conference on Prevention of Family Violence

World Conference on Prevention of Family Violence program coverGovernment continues to explore new ways to protect families

Banff will host the 2005 World Conference on Prevention of Family Violence. It promises to be the first of its kind to focus on prevention.

The conference will bring together 800 to 1,000 participants from around the world to share encouraging practices in family violence prevention, intervention, support and follow-up.

Attendees include international leaders, researchers, academics, policy and program experts, direct service providers, Aboriginal community representatives, and youth.

Funding is being provided to 25 youth and women’s organizations from developing countries so they may attend the conference and take an active role in the program.

The conference will heighten global awareness of family violence and strengthen leadership networks and collaborative partnerships around the world. It will make the connections between human rights, family violence, child abuse and violence against women to point the way for a generation free of family violence.

Awareness leads to changes in Alberta

We know that collaboration is one of the key steps in preventing family violence.

Val Campbell, the Coordinator of Family Violence Initiatives for Alberta Justice, has been working closely with police, other government ministries and community partners to provide service to families at a level that can only be achieved if all partners work together.

As a specialized Crown prosecutor with experience in prosecuting domestic violence cases, Val offers specific training to officers, Crown prosecutors and front line workers. She teaches them what to look for and how to respond to possible cases of family violence, ensuring they have the best possible tools to intervene and prevent future violence.
A domestic violence handbook and guidelines for police and Crown prosecutors will soon be available to police officers for use on-scene to ensure that family violence cases are appropriately and effectively handled.

Collaboration has made it possible for us to improve our response to family violence – to break the cycle of violence in the home and to keep families safe.
