Suspected rapists nabbed by probation officers

Two quick thinking probation officers were instrumental in the arrest
of two suspected rapists in Edmonton last winter. The men were apprehended
in connection with a series of high profile sexual assaults in northeast
Edmonton.
Assistant Chief Probation Officer Rob Wice went beyond his regular duties
and asked staff to look at recent reports of sexual assaults in the area.
He called police to see if they could get a more extensive description
of the suspect and then asked his staff to see if the profile matched
up with any of their clients.
It was Probation Officer Alex Tsang who thought the description matched
one of the offenders he was monitoring, and police were contacted. The
next time the suspect came to meet his probation officer the police were
waiting for him. The second suspect was caught at a nearby fast food
restaurant where he had been waiting for his friend.
"Without our probation officers taking the extra step the assaults
may not have stopped," said Alberta Solicitor General Heather Forsyth. "It’s
times like this I am especially proud of the staff and the work they
do to keep us safe."
Wice and Tsang shrugged off the praise saying, "It's all part of
the job."
Their manager Doug Hildreth, the Chief Probation Officer for Edmonton/Central
district, disagreed. "They went beyond what is normally required
of them; they paid attention to what was going on in the community around
them, and that made all the difference, " he said.
