Law Day

Learning about
Alberta's justice system

By Karen Machura

Attack dog demonstrations, bomb-retrieving robots, medical examiner’s evidence, fingerprint lifting and lawyers and judges in action in the courtroom—did you miss it?

Every year justice partners such as the police, judges, lawyers, specialized experts and court clerks gather to show Albertans how they work, as part of the justice system, to help keep Alberta communities safe.

“This year Edmonton attracted its largest attendance ever,” said Maria Lavorato, Assistant Manager, Court of Queen’s Bench, Court Services Division. “Hundreds of people walked through the Law Courts building gathering information, asking questions and watching dozens of demonstrations such as tactical officers rappelling from the roof, forensic evidence procedures, and how specialized robots are used to defuse bombs.”

Law Day and similar educational events provide the public with unique opportunities to learn more about their justice system, the major participants and the important roles that each plays.

Helping Albertans learn more about how the justice system works can help them to better know their rights, avoid legal problems and understand their responsibilities within their community, province and country.

This year Law Day events were held in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Medicine Hat.

A special thank you goes out to all Law Day volunteers who generously contributed their time and energy into making these community events a success.
